New Year, New Routine for Your Pet:
Tips for a Healthy Start

We all set New Year’s Resolutions for ourselves, so why not set some for our pets? Here are 3 simple ways to ensure that your pet stays happy and healthy throughout the new year!

  1. Schedule an annual wellness exam with your veterinarian. Just as we visit our doctors for check-ups, pets need their annual exams too. Visiting your veterinarian every year allows you to ensure that your pet’s vaccinations, bloodwork, heartworm prevention, and dental care stay up-to-date. Additionally, annual check-ups can help catch potential health problems early, leading to a longer and healthier life for your pet.

  2. Commit to regular exercise. Exercise is one of the easiest ways to keep your pet healthy. Whether it’s daily walks, playtime, or training sessions, staying active helps maintain strong bones, muscles, and a healthy weight, while improving overall quality of life. Remember, every pet has different needs—while your neighbor’s 3-year-old German Shorthaired Pointer may love running for hours, your 10-year-old Golden Retriever may prefer a short stroll around the block. Pay attention to your pet’s unique limits and adjust accordingly!

  3. Improve their diet and nutrition. A well-balanced diet is essential for your pet’s overall health. Many trusted brands recommended by veterinarians, such as Science Diet, Royal Canin, and Purina, are known for their rigorous scientific research and have veterinary nutritionists on staff to ensure each formula meets the specific nutritional needs of your pet. While not every pet may need these particular brands, it’s important to ensure your pet is receiving all the necessary nutrients for a long, healthy life. Additionally, if you’re considering a grain-free diet for your dog, be aware that some studies suggest a potential link between grain-free diets and dilated cardiomyopathy, a heart condition. Make sure to consult your vet to determine the best diet for your pet’s individual needs.
